What fault finding involves
Fault finding is a process, not a guess. We isolate safely, split the circuit down, and use insulation resistance, continuity and loop impedance testing to narrow the fault to a section, then to a point. That is how an intermittent fault that has beaten two previous visits gets found on the first one.
The most common causes we see are moisture in external lighting and sockets, damaged cable from a nail or screw, failing appliances pulling a whole RCD down, loose terminations at accessories, and rodent damage in loft spaces. Each of these has a different signature on a test result, which is why testing beats swapping parts.
If you have a burning smell, visible scorching, a hot socket or a breaker that will not stay in, isolate the circuit at the board if you can do so safely and call us. Those symptoms should not wait. Usually moisture, a damaged cable, a failing appliance or an accumulation of small leakage currents across several circuits. Testing tells us which one, and a board with individual RCBOs stops one fault taking the whole house out.
Most faults are traced within one to two hours. Intermittent faults across several circuits take longer because they have to be provoked before they can be measured.
If you can do so safely, switch off the affected circuit at the consumer unit and stop using it. Then call us. Burning smells and scorch marks are not something to leave until next week.
